Shaft Notes

This page is what we would tell you across the counter if there were time. It is not a catalogue and it does not recommend a model, because the right shaft for you depends on numbers we have not measured yet. What it does is explain which properties matter, in what order, and how each one shows up in a bay.

The Letter on the Label Is the Least Useful Thing on It

There is no industry standard behind R, S or X. One manufacturer's stiff is another's regular, and two shafts wearing the same letter can measure thirty cycles apart on the frequency machine. We treat the letter as marketing and measure the shaft instead.

Weight First, Always

If we could only change one property, it would be weight, and it is not close. Weight sets the rhythm of the swing and the stability of the bottom of the arc, and both of those change strike location. Strike location changes everything downstream.

The mistake we see most often is a golfer in a shaft that is too heavy because heavier sounded more serious. In cold Valley air, an over-heavy iron shaft costs launch height at exactly the moment the ball is least willing to climb.

  • Three weights, spaced far enough apart to be distinguishable
  • Same head, same length, same grip on all three
  • Face taped between every block
  • Scored on strike spread before anything else
  • Winner re-run at the end as a confirmation block

Profile Is a Shape, Not a Number

Two shafts can share a frequency reading and behave completely differently, because that single number says nothing about where along the length the flexing happens. A shaft that is soft near the grip and firm at the tip produces a different launch window from one built the other way round, even though a frequency machine calls them equal.

We keep profile notes on everything on the rack — butt, middle and tip measured separately — so that when a candidate works we can find its neighbours rather than starting again.

What profile predicts

  • Launch height relative to your delivered loft
  • How much spin the build adds or removes
  • Whether the club feels loaded early or late
  • How the shaft responds when you swing harder than usual
  • Which other models are worth trying if the first is close

Tip Trim Is a Fitting Decision, Not a Chart Lookup

Manufacturer trim charts are a reasonable starting point and nothing more. The same raw shaft trimmed a half inch differently at the tip will deliver noticeably different spin, and the correct amount depends on your delivered loft, not on a table.

Every shaft we install has its trim recorded on the build slip. If a club is ever reshafted or replaced, the next person has the actual number rather than a guess.

  • Swing weight before and after any tape

Straight Answers

Four Shaft Claims We Do Not Repeat

01 “Graphite is for slower swings.” Weight is the variable. Graphite simply covers a wider weight range than steel does.
02 “This shaft adds eight yards.” A shaft can improve your strike. Yardage claims attached to a model are meaningless in isolation.
03 “Low torque means more control.” Torque is bundled with weight and profile. On its own it predicts feel far better than dispersion.
04 “You need what the tour uses.” Tour builds are fitted to tour deliveries. The badge tells you nothing about your own numbers.
When to Reshaft

Reasons That Justify the Spend, and Reasons That Do Not

Reshafting a set is a real cost and it is frequently the right one. It is also frequently sold to people whose actual problem was a lie angle or a worn grip. Here is where we draw the line.

  • Worth it: the weight is demonstrably wrong for your tempo
  • Worth it: your speed has changed materially in either direction
  • Worth it: launch is too low to hold a green in cold air
  • Worth it: a shaft is bent, rusted at the tip, or has a suspect joint
  • Not yet: you dislike the feel but the numbers are fine
  • Not yet: nothing has been gauged and the lie has never been checked
