Every hybrid decision is really a question about landing, not leaving. Can this club come down steeply enough to stop on a green that has been rained on since October? That figure is the one an enclosed bay has to infer rather than watch, which makes this the bench where the correction table earns its keep.

Where Do Your Long Irons Stop Earning a Slot?
There is a crossover point in every bag. Above it, the iron produces a flatter, less useful landing and a much narrower margin on strike. Below it, the hybrid is simply a harder club to control. Finding that point is what this session does.
We Look at the Bad Strikes, Not the Good Ones
Anyone can hit one four iron well. The relevant comparison is what happens on the strike that is a groove low, because that is the strike you will make on the fourteenth hole into a February headwind. Hybrids retain far more of their speed and height on those, and that retention is the whole argument for carrying one.
We therefore score the lower half of each block separately. If a hybrid and a long iron look identical on medians but the hybrid is four yards better on its worst third, the hybrid wins and it is not close.

Shaft Length and Weight, Not the Head Badge
Hybrids arrive from the factory with shafts that are frequently lighter and longer than the iron they are replacing, which is how a golfer ends up with a club that goes further than intended and left of everything. Matching the hybrid shaft closer to the iron it neighbours solves this more often than swapping heads.
We also check the lie. Hybrid lie angles are quietly upright from stock, and an upright hybrid in the hands of someone with a steep delivery is a reliable pull machine.
Fixes we reach for first
- Shorten to match the neighbouring iron's rhythm
- Add shaft weight to settle a left miss
- Flatten the lie by a degree, then re-mark the sole
- Move down a loft to open the gap above
- Replace two long irons with one hybrid, not two
Soft Greens Do Not Excuse a Flat Landing
There is a persistent local belief that because the greens around Eugene are receptive from November to April, descent angle stops mattering. It is half true and it leads people into bad equipment decisions, because the same golfer plays Emerald Valley in July and finds the ball releasing thirty feet past the flag.
A set that only works when the ground is wet is a set that fails you in exactly the months you most want to score. We fit the harder condition and let the soft months be the easy ones.
What we will not do
We will not build a hybrid that only produces an acceptable landing when the client swings harder than usual. A club that requires effort to work is a club that stops working under pressure.
